Applications according to VDE-AR-N 4110
- Grid connection stations
- Generation plants
- Photovoltaic systems
- Wind turbines
- Biogas plants

Problem Description
Loads in critical infrastructure, such as grid transfer stations (VDE-AR-N 4110), require an auxiliary power supply to ensure that all protective, secondary and auxiliary equipment necessary for the operation of the transfer station – including metering and measurement devices – can continue to operate for at least 8 hours in the event of a mains power failure. Within this time, it must be possible to carry out at least three complete switching sequences of the motorised load-break switches. Until now, the provision of auxiliary power and long-term buffering has been based on purely battery-powered UPS systems. In practice, however, the problem increasingly arose that, following a long discharge period and due to battery ageing, there was ultimately insufficient energy available to switch safely or to maintain the auxiliary power supply.

What are the difficulties associated with a UPS?
Battery:
- Electromechanical energy storage device
- Long periods of inactivity under low load cause aging of the battery
- Self-discharge leading to deep discharge, e.g. during storage
- Heat is released during charging and discharging
- Environmental conditions (seasons, installation conditions)
Problem:
- A deep discharged or heavily aged battery cannot supply the required current
- A sudden drop in voltage can cause a system to crash uncontrollably, despite UPS buffering
The solution
The HYBRID-UPS from J. Schneider Elektrotechnik provides the required auxiliary power in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4110 for at least 8 hours using a battery, combined with an ultracapacitor for short-term high currents. This unique hybrid combination ensures maximum reliability and availability, as well as the ability to handle high load spikes at the end of the backup period.

EXAMPLE OF THE STRUCTURE AND BLOCK DIAGRAM OF A HYBRID UPS
- AKKUTEC 2403 battery charger with battery monitoring
- (RI measurement and battery circuit test)
- DC UPS with ultracapacitors
- Battery
The following are integrated as standard:
- 5/10-way fuse board for easy load distribution
- Temperature-controlled battery charging
- Automatic shut-off after 8 hours
- Fusebridge battery fuse
- On-button for self-sufficient black start
Additional equipment option:
- Gateway for remote monitoring via Ethernet or Modbus TCP
